Naples
has finally rid itself of the web of clichés and prejudices that have
long trapped it and it has become a must-see destination for tourists
from all over the world, for it is one of Italy's loveliest art cities
and rightly one of its best appreciated. No one can make a list -
even a brief one - of all there is to see in Naples, and it's even
difficult to describe the panorama and the tree-lined streets of the
hill of Posilippo, at the foot of which is the landing place of Marechiaro
where you can meet the fishermen who will accompany you on an unforgettable
day. We will at least try to tell you what you'll see during your
walk down to the landing place of Marechiaro: you'll go past Roman
ruins and will undoubtedly stop in front of the famous Finestrella
to take a picture and admire the unrivalled view of a sea that is
kept crystal-clear by an interplay of currents. Then from the boat,
you'll be amazed by the reef that drops straight down to the sea,
with tuff marked by ancient roads and aqueducts or simply used as
quarrying material. Off Cape Posillipo, you'll go past the underwater
remains of an ancient Roman villa that once jutted into the sea, and
along the coast you can see the best-preserved and most intriguing
Roman villa of the area, Palazzo degli Spiriti - the Palace of the
Spirits - a two-storey building that is now partly submerged. Of all
the Neapolitan gourmet specialities, it may seem trite to mention
pizza, but just try one with anchovies and capers for a truly memorable
experience. The anchovy torte is a more complex dish made with fresh
tomatoes, breadcrumbs and sheep's milk cheese, and then dressed with
oregano, parsley and garlic.
