Set
on the rocky promontory that juts into the gulf between Posillipo
and Miseno, Pozzuoli is the most important town in the Campi Flegrei,
a land in which the ancient and modern, culture and nature, sea and
volcanoes come together to create a kaleidoscope of colours and landscapes.
Pozzuoli is the quintessence of the Campi Flegrei and is also its
capital. The places to visit, the monuments of nature and the works
of man are endless. Just by way of mention, we can cite the Sanctuary
of San Gennaro (St. Januarius), the solfatara, the amphitheatre of
Nero and Flavius, the remains of the great Roman baths (the Temple
of Neptune), the Roman necropolis and the temple of Serapide. But
Pozzuoli has always been an important fishing town, with a unique
feature that distinguishes it from many other Italian towns. Elsewhere,
the fishermen who live and work in the same city and at the same port
are generally united by the same tradition of rites, festivals and
customs. But Pozzuoli instead has two groups of fishermen with two
separate sets of traditions: the fishermen of the net of St. Anthony
and those of the net of Our Lady of the Assumption. As can easily
be guessed from their names, the two groups are linked with two churches
and two city quarters, namely areto 'o russo and abbascio 'o mare,
respectively. However, their differences go beyond this. The fishermen
of the net of St. Anthony usually fish in the gulf, using lampare
or fishing boats with a large lamp to attract fish at night, and those
of the net of Our Lady of the Assumption instead practice mainly deep-sea
fishing. Of course, each group has its own feast day. St. Anthony
is celebrated on June 13th, when the fishermen carry the statue of
the saint in a procession along the city streets, while the feast
of the Assumption is on August 15th. The people of Pozzuoli are nevertheless
united by their culinary tradition and everyone appreciates a good
dish of linguini with sea urchins, served with chilli pepper and parsley
- one of the most typical local dishes.
