Vernazza perches on a rock spur that juts out into open sea and is one of the Cinque Terre towns and part of that marvelous jigsaw cobbled together by humanity and nature. Whether you arrive by sea or by land, you will be astounded by the ability of the farmer-fishermen who were the inhabitants of this territory: the hills that roll down to the sea actually seem to have been sculpted one by one to obtain slim strips of arable land, the "fasce" or terraces. To realize how great an opus this is - the fruit of centuries of work - simply reflect that the low walls erected to support the terraces, if connected, would put together a wall two meters high and eleven thousand kilometers long. The town is set on the slopes of a hill, extending around a main road that rolls down to a tiny piazza opening onto the little port, the only safe landing offered by the Cinque Terre. From an architectonic aspect the porticoes and loggias, the parish church in Genovese Romanesque, the fortress (Belforte) that overshadows the port, all make Vernazza the most interesting town in Cinque Terre. The cuisine here does reflect the interwoven influences of land and sea that is a trait of the Cinque Terre. Not to be missed mussels stuffed with tuna, salamis, cheese, eggs and marjoram; anchovy cutlets; flying squid stuffed with peas or vegetables, grated cheese and breadcrumbs. Nor can we neglect Sciacchetrà, a sweet wine made from grapes grown on the local terraces.
